The European Athletics Team Championships have been organised since 2009 as a continuation of the European Cup but in a slightly changed formula. Since 2015 they have been held every two years, previously every year except for the Olympic years.
In addition to the Super League organized on 29-30 May at the Silesian Stadium, there are three additional European Team Championships Leagues, which take place at the same time, in 3 different European cities. The hosts will be Cluj-Napoca in Romania, Stara Zagora in Bulgaria and Limassol in Cyprus.
The promotion and relegation system developed by the European Athletics Federation determines participation in each of the four leagues. In the Super League, the three teams with the lowest total points will be relegated to compete in the first league in the next European Team Championships edition. Their place is taken by the top 3 teams of the first league.
